Researchers developed an open-source framework and dataset for translating physical touches into emotional data using soft, sensorized companions. They used a lightweight 1D Convolutional Neural Network to categorize 1,326 gestures from a diverse group of participants. This moves us closer to socially assistive robots that can actually 'feel' if you are hugging them or being aggressive.
